As well as this, the way James works with clients is not a ‘do as I say, when I say it and don’t ask why’ approach - I feel as if I have learned an immense amount from working with James, to the point that the way I perform in the gym and through my diet will be changed long after James and I stop working together.
My prep was 18 weeks long, and in hindsight now, looking at the pictures of when I started, I am stunned at the confidence James showed in believing I could get ready for the show, as I was
carrying far more weight than I thought at the time.
The prep was, at times, very draining. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally also. Throughout those periods James did an excellent job of keeping me focussed and motivated, but was flexible enough to accommodate any changes I experienced, be it a decrease of strength (as is common during a calorie deficit like the one I followed) or a change in mood (also common).
After a long and hard 18 weeks I managed to place 3rd out of 16 Novice Heavyweights at the
BNBF Scottish. I could not have been happier to have placed, as I had no real aspirations to win, the challenge was purely a personal one, to get in to condition to get on stage, one that I know I
would not have been able to do had it not been for the guidance, knowledge and support provided by James.
Now that the competition has passed, my fitness goals have changed, and I am now working with
James to make some improvements to my physique and start planning for future challenges, be it bodybuilding competitions or otherwise.

I then commenced an 8 week fat loss programme starting on the 7th March whereby on a weekly basis, I was given my macronutrient targets and a specific weight training programme and varying cardio sessions which were specific to the main areas that I wanted to work.
On a weekly basis I would email the changes in my measurements and James would make any necessary amendments based on my progress and my ultimate goals … the upshot was that over the 8 weeks, although already very lean, I went from 56kg to 50.7kg and body fat of 23.4 to 16.9, with improvements in muscle definition in my legs, abs, arms shoulders... well, all over really! After the fat loss phase, we then worked on a muscle building phase, focusing on some major compound lifts to build strength – I was really please that for someone who is relatively petite, I improved my free standing weighted squats from 30kg to 70kg, Sumo deadlifts from 40kg to 72kg and bench press from 25kg to 40kg)!
More importantly I learned how to balance my daily intake of protein, carbs and fats to get the results I wanted and also how to change this depending upon whether I was on fat loss phase or muscle building phase.
The great news is that although I have not worked on a programme with James since August and essentially continued alone, I have been able to maintain and improve on both my strength training and nutrition plan – that’s not to say that I haven’t ‘fallen off the wagon’ occasionally, however through the learning process I went through with James I have been able to get back on track in no time…. And learned not to beat myself up about it!
The nutrition advice was second to none, you can incorporate lots of flavours in your cooking AND still stay within your macronutrient guidelines! So all in all, I would highly recommend anyone to try out James to support you with your fitness and nutrition goals.

"Back in April 2015 a work colleague challenged me to do Insanity after being told I was getting chubby. At 150lbs and 5 foot 2, I knew I was not in good shape and ate junk all day but denied it because it was easier to do that than try to do something about it. After taking years out (just being a lazy teenager), I tried my hardest, over and over again to get back to fitness and strength a few years back at the age of 20. But i found myself trying to start where I left off with still a very juvenile mindset to training. Through this came injury after injury and suffering heavily with anterior compartment syndrome on my tibial muscle. (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) although I still suffer with this slightly, Jimmy has taught me to train smartly, and helped me to gradually and incredually train myself avoiding injury to get me back to strength slowly.
He has helped me to understand along with my own aims that training is a long term game, and not an overnight process; I have a greater understanding of how to train without being too task orientated.
I am so grateful for the insight he has given me, and although there are a million and one older trainers out there (with age comes experience you could say) what Jimmy lacks in years he more than makes up in young hunger for working at his trade and working with his clients.
My first aim was to complete the Trowse 10k without injury and complete it, aiming for 44 minutes based on my older 5k times and placing 90th- 100th. The result was gratuitous by placing 30th out of 600 runners and smashing a time of 40 minutes! This has vastly impressed me of how I have been training with Jimmy for the shorter more powerful distance of 400m and not at all specifically for the 10k.
I am also an Army Reservist and found this has helped me to 'show up' the rest of my platoon when it comes to a fitness test haha.

"I came to James as an overweight mixed martial artist thinking I was eating clean and exercising regularly both in the regular gym and fight gym but wasn’t getting the results I wanted. I couldn’t understand where I was going wrong and why it just wasn’t happening for me. I followed James for a while on twitter thinking it was something that could maybe help, but didn’t know if it was worth it, as I thought I knew what I was doing. How wrong was I.
When I eventually reached out to James, he spent a lot of time talking with me before we started working together finding out exactly what I had been doing, what my goals are and looking at my food intake across a normal week. Having taken this all into account we formulated a plan for both exercise and food of how to move forward. "Before I started working with James, I would have considered myself a pretty good amateur footballer in fairly decent shape with a decent knowledge of how to lift. I'd worked with other trainers both in person and online, but no one seemed to take my football into account when providing me with training and nutritional programmes. "I started going to the GYM in November 2012 after a disastrous holiday to Turkey in that summer, disastrous I mean by I was overweight, didn’t think it at the time but looking back now god yes I was. At the start of me going to the gym I weighed 98 kgs.
Through 2013/2014 still going to the gym I managed to lose weight but also managed to gain weight through no fault but my own, nutrition wise I didn’t really have a clue, tried all sorts of diets and plans where they worked but when stopped I was just eating normal and packing the pounds back on.
I started to follow a lot of fitness pages on facebook and came across James’s page James Layton Fitness, James posted his podcast which is very good and talked a lot about Exercise & nutrition which made me think that this is guy that I would like to work with.

Yes there were ups and downs throughout the program but James was always there to help motivate & get me back on track. If there is ever a question that I need answered James always answers quickly & with much detail. Ended up finishing my fat loss phase at 79kg.

"I have recently finished a 6 week online programme with James. My initial aim was to become stronger whilst remaining lean. Before contacting James I used to play regular football and attend the gym, however, I was not achieving the results I was seeking in the gym.

"I found out about Jimmy on Facebook and after a year of frustration with no muscle gains I decided to get in touch.
My gym routine was fairly unstructured and I struggled to gain muscle due to doing so much CV playing football and not eating right.
After sending Jimmy some stats about me he set up a fantastic workout routine tailored to suit my goals which were to gain strength and muscle mass. I have worked hard and I have had to push myself - having a trainer does not make up for a lack of personal drive - however if you have that drive to lose weight, get strong, or learn a few more exercises then James is more than capable of showing you the guide ropes and giving sensible advise with regards to diet and training.
