What’s my thoughts on pre-workout supplements?
In my opinion, if you have the spare money & you really want to invest in pre-workout drinks, that’s fine. However I don’t think they are necessary at all, the main active ingredient which will have any acute (short term effects) to benefit your workouts would be caffeine. Ingredients such as creatine & beta alanine have chronic (long term) effects, this means dosing these ingredients pre-workout will not have any effect on your gym performance acutely, long term use regardless of timing will improve gym performance over a period of time using these supplements. Conclusion: Consume 3-6mg per kg of body weight of caffeine 15-60 minutes before your training, as a tablet/capsule form or coffee. Pre-workout supplements are overly hyped & overly priced.
