“Before speaking to and working with James I’d have considered myself a relatively competent gym-goer. I stopped playing football regularly in favour of going to the gym, and would go 4-5 nights a week, normally training 1-2 body parts per session and could execute a variety of exercises with decent form.
My dieting was not structured in the slightest, and I had no real clue about the nutritional value of what I was eating. Whilst I thought I was competent when it came to training, I really wasn’t.
Since becoming interested in the gym, bodybuilding is always something interested me, yet I had never made any attempt to get myself in to competition condition, and probably wouldn’t have had the first clue how to. It was one of those ‘maybe I’ll do it next year’ thoughts.
Through following various fitness/bodybuilding industry individuals through Facebook and Twitter I came across the ‘James Layton Fitness’ Facebook page and decided to get in touch with James, mainly out of curiosity. From looking at a lot of different individuals pages, it was the no nonsense, to-the-point nature of James’ posts and content that appealed to me.
Initially, after speaking to James, we did not start working together, but just discussed my goal of entering in a bodybuilding competition and how we could work together. It was actually several weeks after our initial conversation when James got back in touch with me that I decided to take the idea seriously, enter a competition and work with James to get in to condition.
I’m pretty sure that had James not got back in touch with me, I wouldn’t have followed through on the thought of competing this year From the very moment James & I started working together, his levels of support have been phenomenal, we speak every couple of days and check in every Sunday with a weigh-in and measurements.

My prep was 18 weeks long, and in hindsight now, looking at the pictures of when I started, I am stunned at the confidence James showed in believing I could get ready for the show, as I was carrying far more weight than I thought at the time.
The prep was, at times, very draining. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally also. Throughout those periods James did an excellent job of keeping me focussed and motivated, but was flexible enough to accommodate any changes I experienced, be it a decrease of strength (as is common during a calorie deficit like the one I followed) or a change in mood (also common).
After a long and hard 18 weeks I managed to place 3rd out of 16 Novice Heavyweights at the BNBF Scottish. I could not have been happier to have placed, as I had no real aspirations to win, the challenge was purely a personal one, to get in to condition to get on stage, one that I know I would not have been able to do had it not been for the guidance, knowledge and support provided by James.
Now that the competition has passed, my fitness goals have changed, and I am now working with James to make some improvements to my physique and start planning for future challenges, be it bodybuilding competitions or otherwise.
